ADLATUS® Testloader

Hardware testing without application software – standardized, secure and extendable throughout the entire life cycle.

Overview

Testing without opening the unit.

The ADLATUS® Testloader enables test routines to be downloaded and executed directly in the ECU. This requires neither application software nor opening the unit.

Test routines reside in RAM only for the duration of the test. They therefore do not consume any permanent memory. The Testloader thus requires only as much memory as the most comprehensive test routine.

This also has security benefits: test routines are held in RAM only during the test and are deleted afterwards. They therefore cannot cause any faults in series production.

Applications

Testing from start to finish.

Quality and testing are two sides of the same coin. Along the product life cycle, a wide variety of test scenarios arise for the Testloader.

Scenario 1

Commissioning

Hardware commissioning of the ECU.
Scenario 2

End-of-line test

Functional test at the end of production.
Scenario 3

Parameterization

Parameterization with serial numbers and data sets.
Scenario 4

Diagnosis

Failure diagnosis in the field — without opening the unit.
Develop independently

Test and application decoupled.

Because the Testloader and the application software have only minimal dependencies, you can develop and maintain test routines in parallel, independently of the application.

For communication with the test machine, the Testloader uses existing interfaces, such as CAN or other common automotive and industrial bus systems. Access protection equivalent to that of the application software prevents unauthorized access; where security requirements are higher, signatures and encrypted test functions can be added.

Technical features & specifications

Standardized structure – flexible test cases

Execution

  • Download and execution of test routines via diagnostic communication (UDS, ISO 14229‑1)
  • Test routines remain in RAM only for the test – no permanent memory consumption
  • Unlimited number of possible test steps (download time negligible)

Interfaces

  • Supported interfaces: CAN and other automotive and industrial bus systems
  • Uniform UDS service call interface for all test routines

Maintenance & protection

  • All test routines can be modified and extended throughout the entire life cycle
  • Test independent of the application software – parallel development possible
  • Access protection comparable to application software; optional signature and encryption
FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the ADLATUS® Testloader

What is the ADLATUS® Testloader?

The ADLATUS® Testloader is an embedded test solution for ECUs. It downloads test routines into the RAM of the ECU and executes them there. No application software is required for this.

What areas of application is the Testloader intended for?

The Testloader is used in hardware development for commissioning, verification, validation, endurance testing and release. In manufacturing, it is used for the end-of-line (EoL) test with hardware functional testing and for parameterization with serial numbers and data sets. Defective ECUs can also be diagnosed in the field without opening the housing. Further applications are component and endurance tests as well as ECU and module hardware validation.

How does the Testloader work?

The Testloader is a permanent part of the ECU (resident). The test functions are loaded into RAM only for the test and executed there. All test functions are addressed via a uniform call interface based on UDS. Test functions are grouped in bundles; several downloads within one test are possible.

What security functions does the Testloader offer?

The Testloader provides access protection for the electronics and verifies the authenticity of the test software. Testware can be signed. Where security requirements are higher, test functions can additionally be encrypted. The Testloader ensures that only new original software from the manufacturer can be loaded.

What advantages does the Testloader offer over resident test functions?

Test functions occupy RAM only during the test and do not require any flash memory. They can be modified or extended without a new acceptance test of the application. The Testloader enables standardized, end-to-end hardware testing based on ISO 14229-1. The download time is negligible relative to the test time.
